1.Basic Introduction
A split hull barge/split hopper barge/transport barge/rock split hopper barge, commonly known as a split-hull mud barge or bi-hull mud barge, is a specialized engineering vessel used for transporting and automatically unloading dredged silt and rocks. It is not an ordinary cargo ship, but a specialized transport barge designed to work in conjunction with dredging vessels(such as cutter suction dredger, trailing suction hopper dredger, grab dredger and so on).
Its most distinctive feature is that the hull consists of two symmetrical halves connected at the bow and stern by hinged shafts, forming an openable mud hopper. This design allows for automatic silt unloading without additional equipment, relying solely on the physical changes in its own weight and buoyancy.
Working Principle: The silt unloading process of a split hull barge/split hopper barge/transport barge/rock split hopper barge is based on the torque principle generated by the relative positional change of the center of gravity and the center of buoyancy:
Full Load Opening: When the hopper is full of silt, the center of gravity of the silt is located inside the center of buoyancy of one half of the hull, generating a torque that causes the two halves of the hull to open outwards. With the assistance of hydraulic cylinders, the hull automatically opens, and the silt is dumped into the water under gravity.
Empty-load closing: After the silt is unloaded, the center of gravity of the hull shifts to the outside of the center of buoyancy, generating a torque that causes the hull to close inward. Under the combined action of the hydraulic system and this closing torque, the two halves of the hull automatically close, restoring the complete hull shape, ready for the next loading.
Main Features and Applications of split hull barge/split hopper barge/transport barge/rock split hopper barge
Self-unloading design: No need to rely on auxiliary equipment such as cutter suction dredgers, resulting in high silt unloading efficiency.
Primarily non-self-propelled: Most open-hull barges are unpowered and are towed to the work area by tugboats.
Wide capacity range: According to publicly available information, its capacity covers 75 to 3080 cubic meters, suitable for dredging projects of different scales.
Main applications: Primarily used in conjunction with chain bucket, bucket, or grab dredgers to transport and unload dredged silt, sandbags, and even rocks, widely applied in port dredging, land reclamation, aquaculture construction, and other projects.
