News of cutter suction dredger
The world's largest all-electric, detachable, and environmentally friendly China dredger, "Junlan," independently designed and developed by CCCC Tianjin Dredging Co., Ltd., was officially deployed on April 22, 2025, for the pilot dredging project at the Guanting Reservoir. This marked the vessel's inaugural launch and operational use.
Initial surveys revealed sedimentation issues in the Guanting Reservoir, leading to a decline in its flood control, water supply, and ecological conservation functions. Dredging and capacity expansion were identified as essential measures to restore its operational effectiveness.
The "Junlan" vessel is a customized dredging solution specifically designed for the Guanting Reservoir. Yang Zhengjun, Director of the Dredging Technology and Equipment R&D Center at CCCC Tianjin Dredging, explained that the vessel features a frequency-conversion electric drive system for both its cutter head excavation and dredge pump transportation. The cutter head boasts a drive power of 600 kilowatts, with a maximum dredging depth of 25 meters.
According to confirmation from the China Dredging and Reclamation Association, the "Junlan" vessel is currently the world's largest fully electric, detachable, and environmentally friendly cutter suction dredger among completed dredgers internationally.
Yang Zhengjun highlighted that the "Junlan" vessel possesses several "unique and exceptional capabilities." Among these, it is equipped with the most powerful electric drive excavation and transportation system in the field of detachable dredging equipment. During operations, its cutter head functions like an "underwater diamond drill," capable of effortlessly excavating medium- to high-strength soils. Its excavation efficiency is three times that of previous equipment, with a standard dredging capacity of 2,000 cubic meters per hour—equivalent to emptying a standard swimming pool every hour.
The transportation of slurry generated during dredging is often a challenging issue. To address this, the "Junlan" vessel is outfitted with a domestically developed, internationally advanced new-type dredge pump. By combining an underwater pump and an inboard pump in a "series relay" configuration, it can transport silt continuously over a distance of up to five kilometers in one go.
The vessel is also equipped with an "intelligent brain" that can autonomously optimize operational parameters based on different soil types, enabling remote control and monitoring. Additionally, the vessel can utilize shore power, achieving zero carbon emissions. Its independently developed and designed new environmentally friendly cutter head allows for precise excavation of contaminated sediment without disturbing the surrounding water. Furthermore, the entire vessel adopts a modular design, enabling amphibious deployment through "Lego-like assembly."
"The first deployment of the 'Junlan' vessel fills a gap in China's portfolio of fully electric, detachable, and environmentally friendly cutter suction equipment, while also representing that China's design and manufacturing capabilities for high-performance environmentally friendly cutter suction dredgers have reached internationally advanced levels," said Gao Wei, Secretary-General of the China Dredging and Reclamation Association.
The pilot dredging project at the Guanting Reservoir aims to remove 11.5387 million cubic meters of contaminated sediment from the reservoir bed. The deployment of the "Junlan" vessel is expected to significantly accelerate the progress of the project, improving both the water quality and functionality of the Guanting Reservoir.
