1. Basic Introduction
A backhoe dredger (BHD) is a stationary dredging vessel that consists of a powerful hydraulic excavator mounted on a sturdy pontoon or barge. Unlike the cutter suction dredgers that use pumps to vacuum material, a backhoe dredger uses a mechanical bucket to physically scoop and lift sediment from the waterbed, functioning much like a land-based excavator.
The main components of backhoe dredger: pontoon, propeller, excavator, engine,gearbox,excavator and so on.
How it Works
1. Stabilisation: The pontoon is firmly anchored to the seabed using three large spuds (long, retractable legs) to resist the massive digging forces.
2. Excavation: The operator uses the articulated arm to draw the bucket backwards through the soil (hence the name "backhoe") to fill it.
3. Discharge: Once full, the arm lifts the bucket above the water and rotates the excavator on a turntable to discharge the material into a transport barge moored alongside.
