The cutter head of a cutter suction dredger is its core working component. Installed at the end of the dredger's cutter ladder, it rotates to cut through materials such as mud, sand, and rock from the seabed,river ocean floor, transporting the mixture of debris and water to a designated area by the sand discharge pipes.

Structure and Function
Composition: The cutter head typically consists of a cutter arm, cutter teeth, a hub, and a suction pipe. The design of the cutter arm's profile directly affects dredging efficiency.
Types: Depending on the soil type, cutter heads are classified as open (suitable for soft soil), closed (basket type, enhancing cutting ability), and toothed (equipped with cutting teeth, capable of breaking hard rock).
Drive Method: Driven by a variable frequency motor or hydraulic motor, the speed is adjustable to adapt to different construction needs.
Working Principle: When the cutter head rotates, the cutter teeth cut into the soil and break up the material. Simultaneously, the suction pipe generates negative pressure to suck away the debris, achieving integrated excavation, transportation, and unloading operations. For example, the heavy-duty cutter head of the "Tianjing" can excavate strongly weathered rock and, in conjunction with a lateral anchor, achieve fan-shaped operations.
Performance Parameters
Dredging Efficiency: Depends on the cutter head size (e.g., 600-1200 mm), rotation speed, and soil conditions.
Spillage Control: In actual excavation, "spillage" (material that does not enter the suction pipe) may occur, requiring optimization of the cutter tooth design and suction power to reduce losses.
The cutting efficiency of the cutter head of a cutter suction dredger is also related to the mud concentration. When the mud concentration is controlled between 15% and 25%, the cutting and suction effects of the cutter head are optimal, ensuring sufficient dredging efficiency while preventing the suction pipe from becoming clogged due to excessively thick mud.
In the case of a toothed cutter, the adapters are welded on the front side of the cutter arm. The easily replaceable teeth are fitted on the adapters and fixed in place with a locking pin. When a tooth has to be replaced, the locking pin is removed with a punch. In this way, the tooth can be exchanged rapidly for a change in soil type or for maintenance purposes.
