An amphibious excavator, also known as a swamp excavator or marsh excavator, is a specialized piece of heavy equipment designed to operate in environmentally sensitive, saturated, and low-bearing-capacity terrains where conventional excavators would sink or be unable to function.
How It Operates in Water
The amphibious excavator does not have its own propulsion in water. Instead, it relies on its tracks to "walk" along the bottom of a water body. The buoyancy from the pontoon tracks allows it to float and be maneuvered. For longer moves across deeper water, it is typically towed by a boat or barge.

This significantly reduces ground pressure (often to as low as 2-3 psi), preventing it from sinking in mud, swamps, or shallow water.
Watertight Undercarriage: The undercarriage and its vital components are sealed to prevent water, silt, and debris from entering, ensuring longevity and reliable operation in aquatic environments.
Extended Undercarriage: The chassis is often longer and wider than a standard excavator to enhance stability on uneven or floating surfaces.
Specialized Material Handling Attachments: While it can use standard buckets, it often employs specialized attachments like rakes, grapples, and swamp buckets for clearing vegetation, handling debris, and dredging.
Optional Swivel Boom: Some models feature a boom that can rotate laterally, allowing the cab to remain stable while the arm reaches out to the side—extremely useful for dike and canal work.
